Notesarethefundamentalunitsofmusicnotation.Theyrepresentthepitchanddurationofsounds.Thelengthofanoteisshownbyitsshape,andthepitchisshownbyitspositiononthestaff.Awholenoteisanopencircle,ahalfnoteisafilled-incircle,aquarternoteisafilled-incirclewithastem,aneighthnoteislikeaquarternotewithatail,andsoon.
Restsarethesilencethatisinsertedintomusictocreaterhythmandpacing.Thevalueoftherestisthesameasthevalueofthenoteitreplaces.Awholerestisarectangularsymbolthathangsfromthefourthline,ahalfrestisahatshapethatsitsonthethirdline,andaquarterrestlookslikeasideways'Z'.
TimeSignatureandKeySignature
Atimesignaturetellsushowmanybeatsareinameasureandwhatkindofnotegetsthebeat.Itiswrittenatthebeginningofapieceandlookslikeafraction.Thetopnumbertellsushowmanybeatsareinameasure,andthebottomnumbertellsuswhatkindofnotegetsthebeat.Themostcommontimesignatureis4/4,whichmeansthattherearefourbeatsinameasure,andthequarternotegetsthebeat.
Akeysignaturetellsuswhichnotesaresharporflatthroughoutthepiece.Itisplacedaftertheclefandthetimesignatureandlookslikeasymbolmadeupofsharporflatsigns.Thekeysignaturedetermineswhichnotesareplayedhigherorlowerthanthenaturalnote.Forinstance,ifapieceisinthekeyofGmajor,thekeysignaturewouldhaveanF-sharp,andallFnotesplayedaresharp.
