BeingbornandraisedintheUnitedStates,KaylanileistruggledwithheridentityasaHawaiianandFilipinoAmerican.Growingup,shefacednumerouschallengeswithembracingherculturalheritage.Shewasoftenteasedforherdifferentlooksandforbeingtoo\"Americanized.\"Shefeltlikeshedidn'tfitinwitheitherside,andthislackofbelongingaffectedherself-confidenceandself-worth.

Itwasn'tuntilcollegethatKaylanileibegantounderstandthevalueofherculturalheritage.Shebecameinvolvedinorganizationsthatcelebrateddiversityandlearnedaboutthehistoryofherancestors.Throughthis,shebegantoappreciatethebeautyofbeingamulticulturalindividual.Shebegantoembracehercultureandheritageandrealizedthatitwasavitalpieceofheridentity.
